Job Title: Turf & General Maintenance Crew Member
Reports To: Turf & General Maintenance Crew Supervisor
Status: Full Time, Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Turf & General Crew Member is responsible for maintaining the appearance, safety, and health of cemetery grounds, landscaped areas, turf, and related facilities. This position performs a wide range of outdoor maintenance tasks, including turf care, landscaping, debris removal, and routine grounds upkeep, to ensure the cemetery presents a respectful and well-kept environment at all times.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform or assist with a variety of turf care activities, including mowing, trimming, edging, aerating, seeding, fertilizing, and watering.
  • Assist with landscaping tasks, including planting, mulching, pruning, and removal of plants, shrubs, and trees.
  • Maintain and clean cemetery grounds, including pathways, sections, and common areas.
  • Operate and maintain hand tools, power equipment, and turf maintenance machinery in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Remove debris, litter, and fallen branches as needed to ensure clear and safe passage for visitors.
  • Assist in seasonal grounds care, including leaf removal, snow/ice removal, and storm cleanup.
  • Inspect turf and landscaped areas for damage, disease, or pests, reporting issues to supervisors for corrective action.
  • Work collaboratively with other crew members and follow direction from supervisors to meet daily work assignments and project timelines.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience in groundskeeping, turf care, landscaping, or related field preferred but not required—training provided.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to operate and maintain landscaping and turf equipment safely.
  • Knowledge of basic horticulture and turf maintenance practices preferred.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Strong teamwork skills with the ability to follow directions and complete tasks independently when needed.

Physical Requirements

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Head Horticulturalist to oversee all gardening and landscaping operations across our grounds. This position leads the planning, design, installation, and maintenance of high-quality landscapes, gardens, and plantings while ensuring excellence in customer service and operational efficiency.

The Head Horticulturalist will supervise a team of gardening and landscaping staff, ensure sustainable and visually stunning plant care, and work directly with visitors and stakeholders to address needs and resolve concerns. This position also collaborates closely with the Head Arborist to support the current Level 2 arboretum and coordinate projects that maintain and enhance its collections and visitor experience, as well as with the General Crew Supervisor on special and annual grounds projects.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Oversight

  • Direct, train, and supervise a team of gardeners, landscapers, and horticulture staff.
  • Develop and implement seasonal and annual landscape maintenance schedules.
  • Promote professional growth, safety, and high performance among team members.

Design & Installation

  • Plan and execute new garden and landscape installations, including plant selection, hardscape integration, and seasonal displays.
  • Align landscape design with site aesthetics, sustainability goals, and visitor experience standards.
  • Collaborate with the Arboretum Manager on planting designs and projects that interface with arboretum spaces.

Customer Service & Issue Resolution

  • Serve as the primary contact for horticulture-related inquiries, feedback, and complaints.
  • Respond quickly to visitor or stakeholder concerns regarding plantings, maintenance, or installations.
  • Ensure remediation work is completed to the highest horticultural and aesthetic standards.

Operations & Maintenance

  • Oversee plant health care. Collaborate with General Crew Supervisor on soil management, irrigation systems, turf care, and pest management.
  • Maintain accurate inventories of plant materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Ensure all work meets environmental, safety, and regulatory guidelines.

Collaboration & Coordination

  • Partner with the Arboretum Manager to maintain Level 2 arboretum plantings and grounds to accreditation standards.
  • Work closely with the General Crew Manager on special and annual grounds projects, including pruning, leaf removal, and turf care.
  • Coordinate schedules, staffing, and resources for overlapping or joint projects.
  • Support special events, educational programs, and community engagement initiatives as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Arboriculture, or a related field required; Master’s preferred. Comparable experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 7 years of leadership experience in public gardens, large-scale landscaping, or horticultural operations preferred.
  • Proven track record in landscape design, plant care, and team leadership.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • ISA Certified Arborist or other relevant professional certifications preferred.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all conditions and lift up to 50 lbs.

Cave Hill Cemetery is seeking an individual to provide specialized groundskeeping and quality landscape maintenance. The position being filled is full-time and the operating schedule is Monday through Friday, 8am to 4:30pm. Being team minded and having good attention to detail is necessary. You should enjoy working outside in a park-like setting in any kind of weather conditions. If you have experience in landscaping, farming, or gardening and pay attention to detail, you may be perfect for this job. As a Gardener, you would work under the oversight of our Horticulture and Landscape Manager. You will receive training to assist in the management of a collection of sections within the cemetery. Position Summary

The Customer Service and Security Team Manager is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the cemetery’s security, visitor services, and burial service coordination. This individual oversees a team of representatives, ensures the safety and well-being of all visitors and staff, enforces cemetery policies, and delivers exceptional service to grieving families, visitors, funeral homes, and community partners. The role requires strong leadership, discretion, professionalism, and a commitment to maintaining a respectful and secure environment.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Staff Management

  • Supervise the Security and Customer Service Representative team, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Establish clear expectations for professional appearance, conduct, and service standards.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and development to ensure excellent service and security practices.
  • Coordinate staffing for burials, special events, holidays, and after-hours needs.

Security Oversight

  • Develop, implement, and enforce safety and security protocols for cemetery grounds, facilities, and visitors.
  • Monitor the use and maintenance of surveillance equipment, alarm systems, gates, and access controls.
  • Respond to emergencies, incidents, and disturbances, ensuring accurate reporting and resolution.
  • Liaise with local law enforcement or emergency services as needed.
  • Oversee the monitoring of wildlife and coordinate humane response to animal-related concerns on cemetery grounds.
  • Ensure proper care, feeding, and safe housing of resident domesticated animals, including cemetery-maintained fowl and fox, and train staff in basic animal care procedures.

Customer and Burial Service Management

  • Oversee day-of burial service coordination, including escort and traffic control, setup oversight, and customer service presence.
  • Ensure compassionate, professional interactions with grieving families, funeral homes, and clergy.
  • Manage logistics for processions, equipment placement, and respectful adherence to burial service standards.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain incident reports, visitor logs, and service records in accordance with cemetery procedures.
  • Monitor department budgets, timekeeping, and resource usage.
  • Contribute to policy development and enforcement related to grounds access, visitor behavior, and cemetery regulations.
  • Collaborate with other departments to support cemetery operations and special events.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public safety, hospitality, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of supervisory experience in security, customer service, or cemetery/funeral operations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a calm, compassionate demeanor.
  • Ability to manage sensitive situations with professionalism and discretion.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and basic incident reporting systems.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required.

Position Summary

The Customer Service and Security Team Member serves as a key point of contact for cemetery visitors and staff, ensuring a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment. This individual is responsible for monitoring cemetery grounds and facilities, escorting families during burial services, enforcing cemetery policies, and providing exceptional customer service to all who visit.

Key Responsibilities

Security and Safety

  • Patrol cemetery grounds, buildings, and perimeter to ensure the safety and security of visitors, staff, and property.
  • Monitor security systems, alarms, and surveillance equipment.
  • Respond to and document incidents, disturbances, or emergencies in accordance with cemetery policies.
  • Report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
  • Lock and unlock gates, buildings, and facilities according to operating schedules.
  • Monitor the presence and behavior of wildlife on cemetery grounds to ensure safety for visitors, staff, and animals.
  • Provide basic care and oversight for domesticated animals on the property, including feeding and monitoring the well-being of resident fowl and fox in accordance with established care routines.

Customer Service

  • Greet and assist visitors with directions, information, and general support.
  • Serve as an escort for funeral processions and burial services, guiding families and guests with care and professionalism.
  • Assist with interment logistics, including traffic flow, crowd control, and equipment setup.

Qualifications
